Some Favorite Summer Reads – 2017

September 11, 2017 by Erin McLellan

Life On Pause CoverA little update! My next book—Life on Pause—is out on October 30th! *Throws confetti*

You can preorder here, and also add it to Goodreads!

I’m currently working on the sequel to Life on Pause, which has been really fun to write (it involves a drunk wedding!) and should come out in spring 2018, and the sequel to Controlled Burn, which should come out in late summer 2018. That WIP is about Travis, so if you read Controlled Burn and liked it, Travis is next!

Anyway! Recently, books have really come to my rescue, so I want to spread the love a little. These are some of the books I’ve read this summer. I’ve been on a bit of an m/m binge, but there are some m/f and f/f mixed in too!

NOTE: This post has been edited to remove a recommendation of a work by Santino Hassell in light of the allegations against him.

Starting from Scratch by Jay Northcote: m/m college romance with a trans MC. Sweet, sexy, and with characters so genuinely nice you can’t help but root for them! I love the whole Housemates series, but this one is probably my favorite.

Starting from Scratch Cover by Northcote

Rogue Desire: a Romance Anthology by various authors: This is a political resistance-themed anthology, and I’m just loving it! My favorite has probably been Resistance by Amy Jo Cousins, but they’re all great!

Trust the Chaser by Annabeth Albert: m/m small town age gap romance. I love small town romance and I love age gaps, so I’m eating this up. I’ve also read On Point this summer, and can’t wait for the next book in the Out of Uniform series.

Beyond Shame by Kit Rocha: hot hot hot m/f dystopian romance with lots of ménage and f/f scenes. Yummy! I’ve been ripping through this series and can’t wait to start the Gideon’s Riders series next.

Not So Smart by Misha Horne and AJ Sisko: m/m kinky college romance. This romance is flaming hot. It’s everything my smutty heart desires. I’ve also read Working Out the Kinks by Horne, and loved it too. The first person POV in these stories is great.

Leo Loves Aries by Anyta Sunday: m/m college romance with a perfect slow burn and realistic banter. This is my first read of Sunday’s and is probably my favorite read of the whole summer. I’ve read it twice already, and am currently reading the sequel!

Leo Loves Aries Cover

Treasure by Rebekah Weatherspoon: f/f college romance with sex worker rep. This romance is sexy and sweet. I’m also loving Weatherspoon’s Beards & Bondage series—Haven and Sanctuary.

Treasure by Weatherspoon Cover

Permanent Ink by Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn: m/m age gap romance between a tattoo artist and his apprentice. This is one of my first forays into Daddy kink in romance, and I’m a fan! I also enjoyed Heart of the Steal by Avon Gale and Roan Parrish earlier this summer.

Small Change by Roan Parrish: m/f romance. Another tattoo artist MC—this time the heroine. I’m living for the fierce bisexual heroine in this story.

Small Change by Parrish Cover

Barrel Proof by Layla Reyne: m/m romantic suspense. This was a great ending to the Agents Irish and Whiskey series, and I can’t wait for the spinoffs. If you haven’t read this series yet, you should jump on it!

Abroad: Book One by Liz Jacobs: m/m college romance with a bi girl storyline. This debut is beautiful and quiet and I could gush forever. I’m very impatiently waiting for the next book, especially if it has more smoking hot f/f scenes!

Hold Me by Courtney Milan: m/f romance with a trans heroine. This college romance is so geeky and smart, it completely blew me away. It also has one of my favorite enemies-to-lovers storylines ever.

A Boy Called Cin by Cecil Wilde: romance with a trans MC, who is a college student, and a genderfluid MC, who is a tech millionaire. I haven’t stopped thinking about this book since I read it a month ago. It’s beautiful, and has some of the best consent and negotiation scenes I’ve ever read. I loved it.

The Sun Still Rises by Laura Bailo: m/m romance that takes place in Pamplona during running of the bulls. It is short and sweet—a perfect summer read! I also really appreciated the anxiety rep. because I could see myself in it.
